
Test Stand Technician
Astrobotic is enabling sustainable access and utilization of the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Through its acquisition of Masten Space Systems, we've been developing incredibly unique Research & Development (R&D) programs for space exploration. We work directly with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Defense (DoD), and commercial customers to develop the tech it takes to break down the barriers to space. Together, we'll make wild napkin ideas possible by taking them from the lab to the test site, all the way to the lunar surface and beyond.
This position will be involved in development, manufacturing, and test of Astrobotic's portfolio of test stands, engines, and other technologies in person at its Propulsion Test facility at the Mojave Air and Space Port.
Job Responsibilities:
- Fabricate and assemble mechanical, fluid, and electrical systems.
- Maintain organized, efficient, safe, and clean workshops.
- Support mobile propulsion test stand development, maintenance, and repair.
- Support propulsion test activities; including test stand checkouts, test article readiness, and stand operation.
- Fabricate and assemble prototype components and assemblies, as well as the required tooling.
- Assist facilities personnel in ensuring proper maintenance of facilities.
- Log and track equipment (road vehicles, flight vehicles, test stands, etc.) usage and maintenance.
- Maintain safety and quality standards.
- Execute ethical maintenance practices and operations of a rocket test stand.
- Generate logbooks and operational/inspections checklists.
- Maintain rocket test stand and article configuration and testworthiness.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certified Airframe & Powerplant Technician or relevant experience in Aviation Maintenance.
- Experience in maintaining logbooks and maintenance records.
- Experience with fuel and oxygen systems, high pressure systems, fittings, tube bending, fabrication, and testing.
- Experience in a professional shop setting with a focus on tool management, cleanliness, Foreign Object Debris (FOD) awareness, etc.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and proficiency in geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Ability to work independently or with a group.
- Ability to help develop new procedures, checklists and processes.
- Ability to support on-site propulsion testing at Mojave Air and Space Port.
- Ability and willingness to learn new fabrication techniques.
- Ability to lift and move heavy items up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to walk up and down stairs and ladders.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing needs and requirements.
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience in propulsion test systems and test stands.
- Experience in the military or space industry is a plus but not required.
- Technicians with experience in automotive, racing, or aviation are encouraged to apply.
- Experience with wiring harness layout and manufacturing, including pinning and military specification (mil-spec) circular connectors (e.g., MS-38999, Amphenol, etc.).
- Ability to use SolidWorks to navigate parts and assemblies.
- Manual machining with a mill, lathe, and other manual machining operations.
- Familiarity with welding Aluminum, Stainless Steel, and Titanium.
- Experience with high pressure fluid and gas systems, hydraulics, and cryogenics.
- Experience working in cleanrooms and controlled environments.
- Experience operating a forklift or telehandler.
Salary
The base salary range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for this position. The actual base salary offered for this position will depend on numerous factors including individual performance, business objectives, and the candidates professional experience. Base salary is just one component of Astrobotic's competitive total rewards strategy.
