We design and deliver lunar landers that carry payloads for governments, companies, universities, and nonprofits—and we’re building the next generation of space robotics, including terrain relative navigation, lunar mobility, and mission-critical computing. Founded in 2007 as a Carnegie Mellon University spin-out, Astrobotic is pioneering affordable planetary access to spark a new era of exploration, science, and discovery.
We’re looking for a Functional Manager for our Electronic Systems group to join our Engineering Department. In this leadership role, you’ll guide electrical subsystem teams responsible for designing, testing, and integrating spacecraft and VTVL hardware. You’ll coordinate technical plans, uphold engineering quality, and keep programs on track—while collaborating across Engineering, Program Management, Business Development, and external partners. This role reports to the Director of Engineering.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the Electronic Systems group, ensuring high-quality engineering work and successful project outcomes.
- Collaborate with Engineering Functional Managers and the Program Office to define statements of work, develop staffing plans, report progress, and communicate schedule updates.
- Partner with Business Development on proposals and early-stage studies.
- Coordinate with the Business Office and Project Management to match engineering capacity to quarterly demand.
- Drive delivery of project milestones on time and within budget.
- Oversee and contribute to product design, requirements development, and engineering reviews.
- Hire, onboard, and develop top technical talent.
- Lead key personnel actions including timesheet review, annual performance evaluations, career development planning, merit processes, and quarterly goal setting.
- Provide constructive feedback to individuals and teams aligned to established performance metrics.
- Recommend training, coaching, and development opportunities to support team growth.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering—or equivalent experience.
- Proven success leading technical teams and delivering complex engineering projects.
- Experience in at least one of the following: avionics hardware, component integration and test, electronic packaging, spacecraft power systems, or RF communications.
- Background in aerospace electronics development.
- Strong schedule and budget management skills.
- Excellent organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective communicator at all levels of an organization.
- Demonstrated experience managing engineering personnel.
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
- 10+ years of relevant experience.
- Experience developing electronics for Class D unmanned spacecraft or comparable systems.
- Familiarity with NASA-STD 8739, AIAA-S122-2007, MIL-HDBK-454B, NASA-STD 4001/4003, or similar standards.
- Experience with MIL-STD 461, MIL-STD 464, or equivalent environmental/electromagnetic testing.
