Director, Project Management Office
Astrobotic is at the forefront of advancing space exploration and technology development. We recently launched and operated the first American lunar lander mission since the Apollo Program. Beyond helping lead America back to the Moon, Astrobotic developed and operates reusable vertical takeoff, vertical landing (VTVL) rockets and continues to advance next-generation VTVL capabilities and advanced rocket engines. Established in 2007, Astrobotic is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, with a propulsion and test campus in Mojave, CA.
Astrobotic is seeking a Director of Project Management Office (PMO) to lead a team of project managers overseeing a diverse portfolio of flight projects and R&D efforts across the organization. This role operates in a matrix organization, partnering closely with engineering and other functional leaders while maintaining direct management of the PMO team and driving mission success through program control, risk management, and technical integration. The Director will have direct impact through oversight of multiple concurrent space projects, project teams, control systems implementation, and strategic partnerships.
Note: This position requires active participation in strategic planning and executive decision-making processes. The successful candidate will work closely with senior leadership to drive organizational success.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead company-wide resource allocation across current and future flight/R&D projects, working closely with the Director of Engineering to manage engineering staffing levels and Project Management resource planning in a matrix environment
- Foster cross-functional collaboration between engineering, operations, safety, and quality teams within the matrix organization
- Track and report project KPIs to leadership, including milestone progress and project backlog metrics
- Manages active contracts, contract mods, extensions, key supplier contracts, milestones and other program associated contracts.
- Manages integrated project portfolio schedule and engineering resource scheduling
- Works with leadership to establish portfolio schedule and budget priorities
- Ensure on-time, on-budget delivery of technical projects per contract scope
- Implement integrated program control systems and risk management frameworks
- Partner with Advanced Programs and Business Development on proposal development
- Foster cross-functional collaboration between engineering, operations, safety, and quality teams
- Develop project management team capabilities and growth opportunities
- Interface with customers and suppliers on progress, issues, and deliverables
- Direct long-term PMO capability planning
- Manage program milestones from planning through closeout
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field; master’s preferred
- 15+ years aerospace program management experience
- Demonstrated experience with space flight programs and mission assurance
- Strong systems engineering expertise
- Proven track record of leading technical teams in complex environments
- Experience managing multiple concurrent aerospace programs
- Strong stakeholder management and executive communication skills
- Demonstrated success in resource allocation and budgeting across large programs
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- EVMS implementation experience in aerospace programs
- Program control and mission assurance background
- Experience with government space programs
- Advanced knowledge of aerospace industry best practices
- PMP or similar project management certification
- Experience scaling project management organizations
The base salary range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for this position. The actual base salary offered for this position will depend on numerous factors including individual performance, business objectives, and the candidates professional experience. Base salary is just one component of Astrobotic’s competitive total rewards strategy.
